Data source and method
Last data refresh: 2026-10-20.
All grades on this site come from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) ratings, retrieved from NHTSA's public tire ratings API (api.nhtsa.gov/tires?dataSet=ratings). NHTSA also offers a tire grade search.
What we did with the data
- 7,485 rating rows were grouped into 3,003 tire lines from 209 brands. Brand names that differ only in spelling or capital letters were merged (for example "BF GOODRICH" and "BFGoodrich").
- Exact duplicate rows were removed. Sizes are shown exactly as NHTSA publishes them; many entries cover a whole series rather than one size.
- Grades outside the official scales (traction AA, A, B, C; temperature A, B, C) or a missing treadwear number are shown as published but left out of filters and rankings. This affected 8 rows (temperature not on A-C scale); 1 rows (traction not on AA-C scale); 1 rows (treadwear not numeric);
- 321 tire lines carry a name that also appears under another brand. In several cases this looks like a brand-labelling problem in the source data (for example Yokohama "ADVAN" lines listed under unrelated brand names). We keep these lines visible with a warning but exclude them from rankings and brand statistics.
- NHTSA's data does not say which tire lines are still on sale, so some listed lines may be discontinued.
Limits
UTQG grades are comparative results from government-specified tests run by the tire makers. They are not a guarantee of tread life, grip or safety. Always check the grades molded on the tire sidewall and follow the vehicle and tire maker's guidance.
